A Toast by Mark Whitney

At the 2005 Relay for Life event in South Pasadena, a team was named in honor of Mark Whitney. The Relay for Life is an American Cancer Society fundraising event. The team name was Mark’s Manhattan Project, and special t-shirts were made and given to everyone who walked. We walked for 24 hours straight and succeeded in raising thousands of dollars to benefit cancer research. It was an awesome event culminating in a candlelight ceremony with a special tribute to Mark, given by his lifelong friend Ted Shaw. The tradition continued in 2006, thanks to team captain Jim Anderson, and again we walked (in the cold and rain this time) and thousands more were raised for cancer research.

Now is your chance to help. Mark's Manhattan Project, a non-profit organization, has been established to carry on the legacy of Mark Whitney. We hope to raise money to donate to the Relay for Life and other events & organizations dedicated to cancer research/care. We are accepting donations and are developing various products, which we think are a cool tribute to Mark and a reminder that there is hope for a cure. The Mark's Manhattan Project name and logo were partly inspired by Mark's favorite cocktail, the Manhattan. The Manhattan Project refers to the project to develop the first nuclear weapons during World War II. So thanks to the boy-scout types who created it there is a nod to Mark's favorite cocktail and a deeper meaning of nuking cancer
